Every year on May 18 World AIDS Vaccine Day or HIV Vaccine Awareness Day is observed globally. The Concept of HIV vaccine awareness day came out of a speech by former US President Bill Clinton. Clinton stressed upon the necessity of the vaccine to contain and eradicate the fatal disease.

Screenings for HIV have dropped by over 40-45 % approximately since April, just around the time the COVID pandemic hit India. India has the third-highest number of estimated people living with HIV in the world. The estimated number of people living with HIV/AIDS in India was 2.08 million (20.9 lakh) in 2011.

The study, at the University of California, Berkeley, looked at nearly 410,000 people in the UK, among them those who had only the mutated version of CCR5 were 20 per cent more likely to die before they turned 78.

In the statement, published in the Circulation journal, the researchers indicated that the heart disease risk among HIV patients occurs due to interactions between traditional risk factors, such as diet, lifestyle and tobacco use; and HIV-specific risk factors, such as a chronically activated immune system and inflammation characteristic of chronic HIV.

A local doctor who was also infected with HIV was arrested on April 27 in connection with the outbreak after residents complained.
