A Delhi court Monday awarded 7-year jail terms to real estate barons Sushil and Gopal Ansal for tampering with evidence in the 1997 case of Uphaar cinema fire which had claimed 59 lives.
The order was passed by a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice SA. Bobde, and comprising Justices NV Ramana and Arun Mishra.
The court also directed senior lawyer Ram Jethmalani, who appeared for Ansal, to ask the real estate baron to complete the rest of his jail term.
Real estate barons Ansal brothers – Sushil and Gopal Ansal - on Monday moved the Supreme Court seeking de-sealing of the Uphaar Cinema where a fire tragedy occurred in 1997.
The association and the CBI have also filed application seeking open court hearing on the review pleas.
The Supreme Court has said that the magnitude of the Uphaar fire tragedy may call for "higher sentence" but it could not go beyond the choices under the law while sentencing brothers and real estate barons Sushil and Gopal Ansal who own the Uphaar cinema hall.
The "magnitude" of the Uphaar fire tragedy case, which had claimed 59 lives, "calls for a higher sentence" but the court has to limit itself to the choice available under the law, the Supreme Court said on Wednesday.
