The Supreme Court refused to overturn its January 8 judgment which included critical observations against the state. 

The top court has set a firm deadline for the 11 convicts involved in the Bilkis Bano case, requiring them to surrender before jail authorities by January 21.

After the Supreme Court's verdict, the convicts in the Bilkis Bano case still have some legal options to explore. They can file a review petition in the Supreme Court within 30 days, challenging the decision.

Bilkis Bano Case: The apex court has questioned the selective pre-mature release policy of the Gujarat government in connection with the release of all 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano case.  

Several PILs have been filed in the Supreme Court seeking directions to revoke the remission granted to 11 Bilkis Bano gang-rape case convicts.

The Supreme Court had asked the Gujarat government whether uniform standards, as followed in other cases of murder, were applied while granting remission to 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano case.

11 men convicted in the 2002 Bilkis Bano gangrape case walked out of Godhra jail last year after the Gujarat government allowed their release under its remission policy.

Speaking at the 85th plenary session of the party in Raipur, Tharoor spoke on a range of matters and said, "We (Congress) could have been more vocal on the Bilkis Bano outrage, murders in the name of cow vigilantism & similar issues. Indian people look for support from us. If we are not speaking up, we are surrendering our core responsibility."

Bilkis Bano was a 21-year-old pregnant woman who was gang-raped while fleeing the 2002 Gujarat riots In January 2008, a special CBI court in Mumbai sentenced 11 men to life imprisonment for their involvement in the attack However, on August 15, these 11 men were released from the Godhra sub-jail after the Gujarat government applied its remission policy
