California braced for more lightning storms that could spark dozens of new blazes after over 600 wildfires in the last week burned an area three times the size of Los Angeles. The worst of the wildfires was around the San Francisco Bay Area with roughly 240,000 people under mandatory evacuation orders or evacuation warnings. The National Weather Service on Monday morning lifted a warning for lightning and high winds in the area, giving firefighters some relief, but kept the "red flag" alert in place.

California`s lightning-sparked wildfires more than doubled in size into some of the largest in state history on Friday, forcing over 175,000 people to flee their homes. At least six people have died, 43 firefighters and civilians have been injured, and over 500 homes and other structures destroyed. One fire burned within a mile of the University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC) campus.

Cal Fire said in a statement that a Call When Needed helicopter crashed on Wednesday while fighting a wildfire in western Fresno County. The Bell UH-1H helicopter was on a water dropping mission on the Hills Fire, about 9 miles (14 kilometres) south of Coalinga.

Dozens of lightning-sparked wildfires threatened communities in Northern California`s wine country on Wednesday, and Colorado battled its second-largest fire ever. A group of fires in Northern California that covers over 46,000 acres (18,615 hectares) has destroyed at least 50 structures in a hill and mountain area near Vacaville. Social media videos showed a number of houses on fire, and residents were forced to flee their homes during the night.

A huge forest fire that prompted evacuations north of Los Angeles flared up Friday afternoon, sending up an enormous cloud of smoke as it headed toward the California aqueduct in the Antelope Valley. However, no new evacuations were ordered.

The so-called Hillside fire quickly devoured more than 200 acres (80 hectares) of dry scrub and destroyed or damaged at least six homes before firefighters managed to keep the flames from advancing farther, fire officials said. As of the early afternoon, crews had managed to carve containment lines around 50% of the fire`s perimeter. No injuries were reported, but evacuation orders remained in effect for nearly 500 homes, displacing about 1,300 residents.

The blaze erupted early on Wednesday morning in Simi Valley, northwest of Los Angeles in Ventura County, and by nightfall had charred 1,300 acres (526 hectares) as crews fought to protect the Reagan library and some 7,000 homes in the path of the flames.

Over the last few weeks, the utility has been enacting preventative shutoffs all over northern and central California, but this weekend could be the largest this year. The wildfire has burned an estimated 25,455 acres and was 10 per cent contained as of Saturday morning, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
