Delhi-Dehradun Expressway Opening Date Announced: Commuting between Delhi and Dehradun is about to get significantly easier and faster. What once took around six and a half hours by road will soon take just two to two-and-a-half hours, thanks to the upcoming Delhi-Dehradun Expressway. At present, it takes around 5-7 hours to reach Dehradun from Delhi. The expressway will cut the travel time drastically. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has officially announced the expressway’s opening timeline in the Rajya Sabha.
Delhi-Dehradun Expressway Status: The Highways and Expressways have been one of the key stories of the Narendra Modi government's development plank. Under Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has been working to connect major cities via Highways or Expressway, thus reducing travel time and bringing people and the cities closer. One such expressway nearing completion is Delhi-Dehradun Expressway. At present, it takes around 5-7 hours to reach Dehradun from Delhi. The expressway will cut the travel time drastically.
The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, a 6-lane Greenfield Access Controlled Expressway, spans 212 km and is being built at a cost of ₹12,000 crore. It will connect Delhi to Dehradun via Baghpat, Shamli, and Saharanpur, reducing travel time from 6 hours to 2.5 hours. The last 20 km passes through the eco-sensitive Raja Ji National Park, featuring Asia’s longest 12-km elevated wildlife corridor with animal and elephant underpasses. The expressway includes 113 underpasses, 5 railway overbridges, 4 major bridges, and 62 bus shelters. Initially set to open by December 2024, it is now expected to be operational by January 2025, ensuring faster, safer, and seamless travel.
With the construction of the Delhi-Dehradun Access Controlled Greenfield Expressway, the travel time from Delhi to Dehradun will be reduced from 6 hours to 2 to 2.5 hours.
