Party veterans Duraimurugan and T R Baalu were also unanimously elected as general secretary and treasurer respectively. 

The election of Stalin as the DMK's second president was fairly a smooth affair as all the 65 district secretaries of the party proposed his name for the top post and his is the only nomination.

The timing of his statement bears significance as it comes just a day ahead of the executive committee meeting that is scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

The veteran leader had been receiving treatment at home, but was shifted to the hospital again on Friday night.

Stalin had warned of grave discontent in the states that would be penalised for successfully controlling their populations.

Stalin has also written to the Chief Ministers of 10 states that will be affected by the Centre's decision, asking them to oppose the Centre. There isn't a single BJP or NDA CM on this list.

DMK President M. Karunanidhi on Saturday turned 94 and party leaders and cadres in large numbers gathered outside his residence here to greet him.

The 92-year-old leader was rushed to the hospital on the night of December 15. Doctors treating him had said that a process was initiated to clear his infection.

Karunanidhi was on Wednesday discharged from Kauvery hospital in Chennai.

DMK chief M Karunanidhi will appear before the Chennai court on January 18 in connection with a criminal defamation charge filed against him by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa.
