The AIADMK on Wednesday announced that incumbent Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami will be the party’s chief ministerial candidate for the Tamil Nadu assembly election in 2021. The announcement was made by Deputy Chief Minister & AIADMK leader O Panneerselvam after weeks of negotiation and speculation.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami Thursday laid the foundation stone for a Rs 1,259 crore seawater desalination plant in neighbouring Kancheepuram district, making it the third such unit that would address the city's drinking water supply needs.

Palaniswami asserted that 525 millions of litre (MLD) of water is being supplied by the Chennai Metro Water per day to the city and that Rs 158.42 crore has been sanctioned to the civic body to "take care of water scarcity in a war footing".  

The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court directed the TN govt to file its response by June 6.

"If someone is attacked, the natural course would be to defend and safeguard themselves. This is what has been done by the police in response."

The AIADMK faction led by Palaniswami and Panneerselvam on Monday opposed a plea by sidelined leader Sasikala's camp to cross examine some of the party leaders who had filed affidavits in their favour.

Because of this “cordiality”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised full support to the state government, he reportedly said.
