The CBI has now registered a case against the UK-based Cambridge Analytica and Global Science Research Ltd for illegally harvesting data of the India Facebook users. The central agency has alleged that Cambridge Analytica and Global Science Research Ltd have illegally harvested data of the Indian users for commercial purposes

Facebook Inc said in late September that hackers stole digital login codes allowing them to take over nearly 50 million user accounts in its worst security breach ever, but did not confirm if the information had actually been stolen.

The parliamentary standing committee has asked the government to get an assurance from Facebook that it would not misuse the users' data to influence polls in India.

Zuckerberg repeatedly defended the company`s privacy practices, saying that users have control over their own data and decide what to share. But when asked if his data had been improperly used he replied: "Yes." He gave no further details. 

Facebook has come under fire in recent weeks after it was revealed that the personal data of millions of users of the website fell into the hands of a political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica that worked for US President Donald Trump's campaign.

Facebook would remain the poll panel's social media partner during the Karnataka assembly elections, CEC Rawat said on Tuesday.

Ravi Shankar Prasad said that Rahul Gandhi must come clean on the issue, citing media reports that appeared during Gujarat elections.

Rahul alleged that media networks bit the “bait”, making issue of death of 39 Indians in Iraq “vanish from radar”.
