Recently, more than 500 million people’s data was leaked and that initiated the debate of data privacy which is much needed for now. This also sparks a narrative on whether people should give their personal information on these social media websites or not.

Facebook has been grappling with data security issues for years. In December 2019, a Ukrainian security researcher reported finding a database with the names, phone numbers and unique user IDs of more than 267 million Facebook users nearly all US-based on the open internet. It is unclear if the current data dump is related to this database.

Locking profile enables users to apply multiple existing privacy settings plus several new features to their Facebook profile.

The social networking giant made the announcement during a session at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) taking place here.

Updating its Community Standards, Facebook said that besides authenticity, it focuses on upholding three other values while limiting expressions - safety, dignity and privacy.

Facebook said it is also giving people the ability to integrate their Instagram posts directly into their Dating profile and giving them the ability to add Instagram followers to their Secret Crush lists, in addition to Facebook friends.

The database included 133 million records of US-based Facebook users, 18 million records of UK users and more than 50 million records of users in Vietnam.

In its 2019 diversity report, Facebook said it has people of diverse backgrounds and experiences, more people of colour, more women in both technical and business roles, and more under-represented people in leadership.

The updates, effective from July 31, are the result of Facebook's work with the European Consumer Protection Cooperation Network and inputs from ongoing conversations with regulators, policymakers and consumer protection experts around the world, the company said in a statement on Thursday.

In September, Facebook admitted that unknown hackers exploited three bugs to steal the personal details of 50 million users -- later adjusted to 30 million.

Facebook disabled 1.2 billion accounts in Q4 2018 and 2.19 billion in Q1 2019.

According to Digital Trends, the latest hack involves the use of browser extensions.

"We are committed to protecting people's information and safeguarding the integrity of elections in India," a Facebook spokesperson said in an e-mail.

Twitter, however, said it had banned GSR and Cambridge Analytica from buying data or running adverts on the website and that no private data had been accessed.

Facebook confirmed the test in February this year.

Facebook members outside the United States and Canada, whether they know it or not, are currently governed by terms of service agreed with the company`s international headquarters in Ireland.

Under the `Hello` button on you friend`s profile, the new options can be seen by just holding the button.

The social media giant is using a new kind of captcha -- a type of challenge-response test used in computing to determine whether or not the user is human -- to verify whether a user is a real person or just a bot.
