The fossil is made up of a nearly complete skeleton and would have weighed just three ounces when it was alive.

The new discovery, published in the journal Geological Journal, is from a time known as the Triassic-Jurassic boundary, right after a worldwide mass extinction. 

Aside from making Jurassic ecosystems of 161 million years ago more colourful, the dinosaur is interesting because it has features that are both ancient and modern.

The 150 million-year-old giant prehistoric sea reptile is believed to be the first of its species located in Antarctica and the oldest creature ever found on the continent.

The new specimen was originally discovered on the Somerset coast, during the mid-1990s, and is from the Early Jurassic, roughly 200 million years old. 

Shingopana roamed the Cretaceous landscape alongside Rukwatitan bisepultus, another titanosaur identified in 2014, researchers said.

 Two fossils discovered in China show that the volant, or flying, way of life evolved among mammalian ancestors 100 million years earlier than the first modern mammal fliers.

Dragonfly fossils are hard to preserve, but the newly discovered fossil is comparatively well-preserved, researchers said.

Selam, which means "peace" in the Ethiopian Amharic language, was an early human relative from the species Australopithecus afarensis -- the same species as the famous Lucy skeleton. 

The remnants of skin which are fossilized, cover the armor plates on the dinosaur’s remains, which are petrified from the head to the hips.

The orchid family has some 28,000 species – more than double the number of bird species and quadruple the mammal species.
