Foreign Secretary Harsh V Shringla met with US deputy secretary of state Wendy Sherman on Thursday.
They discussed a broad range of shared priorities, including continued coordination on Afghanistan.
India's Foreign Secretary Harsh V Shringla said, "India espouses the policy of No First Use against nuclear weapon states and non-use against non-nuclear-weapon states."
Shringla reiterated India's long-standing and unwavering commitment to universal, verifiable and non-discriminatory nuclear disarmament leading to the complete elimination of nuclear weapons.
He explained, "We believe that nuclear disarmament can be achieved through a step-by-step process underwritten by a universal commitment and an agreed multilateral framework."
He called for meaningful dialogue among all states possessing nuclear weapons for building trust and confidence.

During the meeting, the senators discussed how to further strengthen the partnership between the two countries.
Congressman Eliot Engel also took a jibe over Trump's mocking of India's building libraries in Afghanistan by saying, "this contribution of course buys more than just a library."
The new Indian envoy said he is amazed at the amount of progress that the US-India relationship has made in the last few years.
