In its reply to a parliamentary panel's communication over the issue, the I&B ministry said that there is a rising concern in society that the constitutional right of "freedom of expression is being misused.

The Centre has issued an advisory to news websites and OTT platforms It has asked them to refrain from carrying online betting ads on their platforms It also warned private satellite television channels of penal action under applicable laws for violation of the advisory

In the advisory, the I&B Ministery has reportedly cited specific instances of hyperbolic statements by news anchors and scandalous headlines/taglines during the reportage of the Ukraine-Russia conflict and Jahangirpuri violence.

In a statement, the ministry said that the YouTube accounts blocked by the Ministry had a total subscriber base of over 1.20 crore and their videos had garnered over 130 crore views.

According to officials, some posts tagging entrepreneur Elon Musk were tweeted from the ministry's Twitter handle.

I&B Ministry said that the rationale for bringing media websites under the ambit of the law is "well-reasoned". Over 500 publishers have already submitted their details in the requisite format. Media websites will have to comply with new IT Rules with immediate effect.

In its advisory, the ministry said on various occasions in the past, it has issued advisories to private satellite TV channels to broadcast content strictly adhering to the Programme and Advertising Codes as prescribed under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995 and the rules framed thereunder.

 At present, OTT platforms that are digitally streamed falls under the domain of the Ministry of Information and Technology (IT).

In a bid to promote Indian languages, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has asked all satellite TV channels to display the casting, credits and titles of Hindi and regional language serials in the respective languages also.

The advisory has been issued to promote the Indian languages said Union Minister of I&B Prakash Javadekar.

The decision has come into effect from Tuesday and will be valid for a period of three years.
