Donald Trump administration officials have been stepping up their anti-China rhetoric for months.
On the campaign trail, Trump had warned that Biden would go easy on China.
Trump announced the move five days after he surprised many in Washington by making the conservative Republican lawmaker from Texas his selection to replace Daniel Coats as director of national intelligence, a post that oversees the 17 U.S. civilian and military intelligence agencies including the CIA.
Dan Coats, the current Director, will be leaving office on August 15, according to Trump.
Several Congressmen from Texas, Florida, Arkansas and California issued a statement criticising the attacks, and paid condolences to the families of the deceased and injured.
