Former Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar's son Utpal Parrikar today filed nomination papers to contest the election as an independent candidate from Panajim seat.

There are reports of big rebellion in Goa BJP, former CM Manohar Parrikar's son Utpal Parrikar talks about contesting as an independent from Panaji seat.

It will align the vision and aspiration of the premier defence institute with the contribution of the Padma Bhushan awardee. The Defence Minister chairs the executive committee of the institute's society.

"This verdict once again proves to the people of Goa and India about how clean Parrikar`s image was. I do not know what to say about Rahul Gandhi, but Manohar Parrikar was clean, both as the chief minister of Goa and Defence Minister," Goa CM Pramod Sawant said. 

Addressing a press conference in Panaji, Sawant also said, that the theme for this year`s edition of the science festival would be 'climate'.  The science festival dedicated to the memory of former Chief Minister late Manohar Parrikar on the latter`s birth anniversary December 13.

Parrikar, a former Defence Minister died in March this year, following prolonged illness.

The BJP also lost the South Goa Lok Sabha seat to the Congress.

The bypolls in Shiroda and Mandrem became necessary following the resignation of their sitting Congress MLAs.

The Panaji Assembly bypoll was necessitated due to the death of sitting MLA and former chief minister Manohar Parrikar in March.

Utpal Parrikar, the elder son of late Goa Chief Minister and former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, on Monday wrote to Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar, accusing him of lies and blaming him for misusing his father’s name for political gains

Recently Pawar had claimed that Parrikar and quit as the minister as he did not agree with the Rafale deal, in which the opposition has alleged corruption.

Sawant said that the PM Modi-led NDA government had spent Rs 15,000 crore for infrastructure development in Goa, which includes highway expansion, an upcoming international airport and new bridges which would help the BJP win the Lok Sabha poll.

Manohar Parrikar`s assembly constituency of Panaji is scheduled to head for bypolls owing to the former Defence Minister`s death on March 17.

Parrikar died here on March 17 after battling illness for about an year.
