During an online media briefing, Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya said 19 African countries have reported 53,903 mpox cases, with 11,147 confirmed and 1,109 deaths since the start of this year.
WHO said that both names -- mpox and monkeypox -- will be used simultaneously for one year while the monkeypox is phased out.
In Delhi, the first case of monkeypox was reported on July 24.
Myocarditis was previously associated with smallpox infection, a more aggressive virus, and the case study authors said that `by extrapolation, the monkeypox virus could have tropism for myocardium tissue or cause immune-mediated injury to the heart`.
Since early May 2022, monkeypox cases have been reported from countries where the disease is not endemic.

The 35-year-old who has tested positive for monkeypox disease has no recent history of foreign or local travel, news agency PTI reported.
The 22-year-old man in Kerala died of monkeypox disease on Saturday. The government has isolated 21 people who had come in contact with him.
Samples of a 22-year-old man, who died in Kerala on July 30, have come out positive for the monkeypox virus. The man had recently returned from the UAE where also his samples had tested positive for the disease, news agency PTI reported.
"The team will be headed by Dr VK Paul, member (Health), NITI Aayog and members including Secretary, Union Health Ministry, Pharma and Biotech," sources said.
The samples of the suspected monkeypox case in Andhra have been sent to NIV for testing.
NITI Aayog's VK Paul has said there is no need to panic.
