Two people died in floods while another two lost their lives in mudslides, according to the government's Disaster Management Center. Seven people are missing in floods and mudslides. Figures released by the government showed that more than 5,000 people have moved to temporary shelters and nearly 500 houses have been damaged.

The death toll from the mudslides in a California coastal town rose to 19 today but a man who had also been on the list of missing persons was located alive, authorities said.

Most of the casualties were reported from the main southern island of Mindanao.

Taiwan's central government was contacting the heads of mountain villages, arranging free evacuations to shelters, monitoring rivers and mudslide-prone areas.

More than 750,000 hectares (1.85 million acres) of crops have been damaged and direct economic losses totalled more than 25.3 billion yuan ($3.72 billion).

The epic rainfall also has driven 160,000 people from their homes in Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay, said officials.
