The second 1,000 MW atomic power unit at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) that suffered an outage on Monday due to a problem in its steam dump valve is expected to start operations on Friday, said a senior official of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL).

India's atomic power plant operator NPCIL is building four 700 MW PHWRs -- two each at Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) in Gujarat and Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPS) in Rajasthan.

This is the second 1,000 MW pressurised water reactor to go critical in the country. The first unit at Kudankulam went critical in July 2013.

India`s atomic power plant operator NPCIL is setting up two 1,000 MW atomic power plants at Kudankulam in Tirunelvelli district.

The unit which was under annual maintenance shutdown for nearly seven months restarted fission on January 21.

According to Power System Operation Corporation Ltd (POSOCO), the Kudankulam nuclear power plant is expected to be connected to the grid on January 24.

State-run Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) can now collaborate with other Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in the nuclear field, with Parliament today passing a bill in this regard after government allayed fears that the step will allow FDI into the sector or enable participation of a private firm in atomic power production.

The India-US contact group, which was set up in January, last met in Washington in November.

According to sources, the commissioning of the second unit is expected to happen at the end of 2016.

The NPCIL`s two power reactors at Kalpakkam have renewed their operational licence with the sectoral regulator till Dec 2015, a senior official said on Saturday.

The joint venture company between NTPC and NPCIL, Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam, is facing legal issues, as under the law only government or its agencies can undertake activities in the atomic field, a senior government official said Tuesday.
