Visiting the site of the massive oil spill here, Tamil Nadu Chief Minsiter O Panneerselvam on Sunday assured that the incident had not affected the marine life in any way and the fish could be consumed, adding that over 90% of the spill had been cleared up.
Tamil Nadu police on Friday registered cases against the management of two tankers that collided last week leading to a massive oil spill along the coast, that has affected marine life in the area.
As per reports, although nearly 70 tonnes of oil sludge has been removed by hundreds of volunteers, the spill has crossed the Marina Beach and travelled 32km south. It has now entered the Palavakkam beach on the East Coast Road.
The incident took place on January 28 when `M T BW Maple` was leaving after emptying Liquefied Petroleum Gas and M T Dawn, Kanchipuram, was on its way to berth at the Ennore port.
With no major damage to the vessels, the collision however left the marine life destructed with numerous dead fish and sea turtles being washed ashore on Chennai's coast.
