Carreno Busta needed to lift the trophy at Bercy, and at next week`s Sofia Open, to deny Schwartzman a spot in the ATP Finals. Milos Raonic, on the other hand, had to dig deep to beat 22-year-old Frenchman Ugo Humbert 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(7) in Paris.

Djokovic, who is bidding for a second French Open and 18th Grand Slam title, still reached his 38th major semi-final relatively comfortably.

Rafael Nadal beat fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta 6-1, 6-1 in the Italian Open in Rome on Wednesday. Nadal, who received a bye into the second round, has not played a tournament since winning his 85th singles title in Acapulco. The 19-time Grand Slam champion had earlier skipped the Western & Southern Open and the U.S. Open in New York due to COVID-19 concerns.

Nadal will now lock horns with the winner of another fourth-round clash between Nick Kyrgios and Russia's Karen Khachanov.

Djokovic will now lock horns with Frenchman Lucas Pouille for a place in the semi-final of Cincinnati Open.

Nishikori overcame Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta in his third five-setter in four rounds on Monday and has spent nearly 14 hours on court at Melbourne, more than any other player.

German fourth seed Alexander Zverev beat Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta 7-6(4), 6-2 on Friday to set up a Miami Open final showdown against big-serving American John Isner, who earlier overwhelmed Juan Martin del Potro.

Zverev advances to a Friday semi-final against Spanish 16th seed Carreno Busta, who survived a match point to upset South African sixth seed Anderson 6-4 5-7 7-6(6). 

Anderson saved a pair of match points in the second set and shifted momentum in his favour but Carreno Busta, seeded 16th at Crandon Park, regrouped in the decider where the two players stayed on serve until the tiebreak.

It means the tournament has lost two of its top-ranked players after having already being shorn of three major stars – Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga – before it began, as they try to recover from injuries.

Austrian fifth seed Dominic Thiem battled into the last 16 of the Paris Masters on Tuesday with a 6-4, 6-7 (3/7), 6-4 victory over German lucky-loser Peter Gojowczyk.

Anderson, who in the absence of world number two Andy Murray benefited from a favourable draw, will face world number one Rafael Nadal in Sunday's final.

Carreno Busta, the first player to face four qualifiers in any Grand Slam, booked a Friday semi-final against the winner of a night match between South African 28th seed Kevin Anderson and 17th-seeded American Sam Querrey.

Nadal won 6-2, 2-0 after Carreno Busta withdrew with abdominal pain, in 51 minutes, reports Efe. Nadal is bidding for his 10th French Open title.

Nadal will face title-holder Novak Djokovic for a place in the final if the world number two gets past Austrian sixth seed Dominic Thiem in his quarter-final.
