Customers who have not opted for do-not-disturb (DND) and have subscribed to receiving promotional calls will continue to receive them from a 10-digit number with the prefix 140. 

This includes mandatory traceability for promotional messages starting December 1.

Consequent to this direction, Access providers have taken widespread actions which led to a significant reduction in the complaints registered against the spam calls.

Detect And Block International Calls: The Department of Communications (DoT) and TSPs have collaborated and devised a system to identify and block such incoming international spoofed calls from reaching the Indian telecom subscribers. 

TRAI said that it has observed a significant rise in spam calls, with over more than 7.9 lakh complaints reported against Unregistered Telemarketers (UTMs) in the first half of the year 2024 (January to June).

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has directed all telcos to comply with its latest directive and submit regular updates on the actions taken on the first and sixteenth of every month.

This year, India has reached the fourth position among the 20 countries affected by spam calls. Only one scammer makes an average of 202 million spam calls per spammer in India. Whereas 27,000 calls are made every hour and 6,64,000 daily from the same phone number.

According to a new report, India ranks fourth in the world among the countries affected by spam calls. On an average, a person in India receives at least 16 spam calls every month.

The regulation says that the companies will have to register themselves for commercial SMS and calls.
