Imports of thermal coal - mainly used for power generation - jumped 12.6% to 197.84 million tonnes in 2019. However, imports of coking coal - used mainly in the manufacturing of steel - fell marginally, following two straight years of increase, government data showed.

In view of rising production of the dry fuel, India plans to completely stop thermal coal imports in 2-3 years that would result in annual savings of Rs 40,000 crore, Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday said.

Thermal coal imports surged 18 per cent at the country's top 12 major ports to 55.90 million tonnes (MT) in the first seven months of the current fiscal amid government efforts to boost domestic output, led by state-owned Coal India Ltd.
These 12 major ports had handled 19.62 MT and 8.10 MT of thermal and coking coal, respectively, in the first quarter of the previous fiscal.
