The plan is to issue around one lakh visas every month, a senior official of the US embassy said.

The issue was raised by Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla during an online meeting with US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale.

The debate on immigration will be a pivotal issue in Washington in early 2018 ahead of midterm congressional elections in November.

"As a demonstration of the administration`s commitment to supporting American businesses, DHS is providing this one-time increase to the congressionally set annual cap," Kelly said in a statement.

Interestingly, the number of non-immigrant US visas to Indians has increased by 28 percent in March and April this year as compared to the monthly average of the previous year, according to the newly-released monthly official data.

The US on Friday said the premium processing of H-1B visas, which are popular among Indian IT firms and professionals, has been suspended temporarily to handle the huge rush of applications for the work visas in the first week of April.

The Congressional mandated limit on H-1B visas include 65,000 in the general category and another 20,000 for those foreign students who have masters or higher degree from a US academic institution.

"I am establishing new vetting measures to keep radical Islamic terrorists out of the United States of America. We don't want them here," Trump said.
