Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma were hanged at 5.30 am on Friday (March 20, 2020) at Delhi's Tihar Central Jail. In her first reaction, Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi said, “Finally they have been hanged, it was a long struggle. Today we got justice, this day is dedicated to the daughters of the country. I thank the judiciary and the government.”

Three of the four death row convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape case approached the International Court of Justice (ICJ), seeking a stay on the execution of their death sentence. The three convicts who approached the ICJ are Akshay Singh, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma.

The Union Home Ministry has received a mercy petition of Pawan Kumar Gupta, one of the four men facing the death penalty in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case. The ministry will forward the petition to President Ram Nath Kovind for his consideration and decision.

The Patiala House Court has also dismissed the petition restraining Nirbhaya's convicts on the death warrant. Nirbhaya convicts are to be hanged on Tuesday, March 03, 2020.

On February 16, Vinay had tried to hurt himself by banging his head against a wall in his cell, said Tihar Jail official on Thursday. The official added that Vinay had received minor injuries and he was taken to hospital for treatment. Sources also claimed that Vinay tried to injure himself in order to delay his hanging.

A bench of Justices R Banumathi, Ashok Bhushan and AS Bopanna is expected to pass orders at around 2 pm today on Sharma's plea. The bench heard arguments for nearly two hours on behalf of Sharma and the Union of India and NCT of Delhi.

The President had on Saturday (February 1, 2020) rejected the mercy petition filed by Sharma.
