The man who leaked the "Pentagon Papers" about the Vietnam War defended Julian Assange at his London extradition hearing on Wednesday, saying WikiLeaks had acted in the public interest and warning Assange would not get a fair trial in the United States.

Ecuador has suspended Julian Assange`s citizenship and accused him and people connected to his WikiLeaks group of collaborating in attempts to destabilise the Andean nation`s government, after years of offering him shelter.

Assange`s Ecuadorean citizenship was suspended on Wednesday, Foreign Minister Jose Valencia told reporters. 

The computer hacker faces the prospect of extradition to the United States. 

Assange, arrested by British police in London and carried out of the Ecuadorean embassy there, faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison on the American charges, the US Justice Department said in a statement.

"This is an extradition warrant under Section 73 of the Extradition Act. He will appear in custody at Westminster Magistrates' Court as soon as possible."
