Maldives police have arrested a leader of opposition political party on a charge of plotting to overthrow the government.

Maldives' president appointed a new vice president on Wednesday, weeks after his former deputy was convicted of attempting to assassinate him.

Adeeb still faces charges of trying to assassinate Gayoom when an explosion hit his presidential speedboat last year. 

The Maldives' opposition on Saturday vowed to regroup for a second night of demonstrations hours after police broke up a planned 72-hour protest demanding the release of the country's ex-president and other political leaders.
