Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Monday said that India has distributed over 750 million COVID vaccine doses since the launch of the nationwide campaign in January this year. At this rate, 43 percent of the country's population will be covered by December. COVID-19 Task Force Chairman NK Arora praised all the contributors to this mission.

Delta variant first emerged in the state of Maharashtra and travelled northwards along with the western states of the country before entering the central and the eastern states. Dr Arora also expressed his concern over the severity of the variant and said that the Delta variant replicates faster and leads to a strong inflammatory response in organs.

Dr NK Arora also added that the emergency use authorisation for the vaccine is likely to come within weeks. "The issue of school opening and other things are very important and those are being discussed actively," Dr NK Arora said.

Serum Institute’s Covishield can provide 61 percent effectiveness against the Delta strain. Central government had doubled the gap between the two doses of Covishield without a nod from the NTAGI, claims Reuters report.
