Apple led the market in smartphone revenues capturing a 43 per cent share and recording its highest-ever Q3 revenues, shipments, and ASPs.

A report by the research firm IDC said phablets -- with displays larger than 5.5 inches (14 centimeters) -- will account for some 40 percent of the 1.5 billion smartphones sold in 2017, and that the phablet share will rise to more than half by 2019.

While mobile phone-related displays have surged forward, sales of TV screens contracted roughly 8 per cent per year during that same 2010-2016 period, Yonhap reported.

South Korean giant Samsung Electronics regained the top status in the global smartphone market in the first quarter of the year, even before the release of its flagship Galaxy S8, a report said on Saturday.  

Smartphone shipments in India grew a healthy 15 percent in the second quarter this year compared to the global smartphone market which grew a mere three percent, market research firm Counterpoint Research reported on Friday.

To boost sales of its phones and new operating system, Microsoft said last month that it would provide tools to software developers to make it easier to design apps for Windows based on apps that run on Android or Apple
