Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) plans to buy 15 buses that can run on hydrogen fuel. IOC will also set up a facility at its Faridabad research and development (R&D) centre to produce hydrogen to run the buses. These vehicles produce electricity using a fuel cell-powered by hydrogen, rather than drawing electricity from only a battery.

Researchers not only improved on the amount of energy produced and stored, they managed to reactivate a process in the algae that has been dormant for millennia.

The advance may lead to a new source of hydrogen fuel, ease demand for fossil fuels and boost the economy of countries where sunshine and seawater are abundant.

Scientists from the US Army Research Laboratory (ARL) had earlier announced that their nano-galvanic aluminium-based powder produced pure hydrogen when coming into contact with water.

The device called Synlight, which they believe could pave the way toward creating hydrogen to use as a green fuel, is being developed at the German Aerospace Center near Cologne, Germany.

Hydrogen fuel is desirable because, unlike gasoline, it doesn't release carbon into the atmosphere when burned.
