The annual domestic requirement of India, which is the world's second largest producer, is only 26 million tonnes.

On the corresponding date last year, 258.20 lakh tons had been produced with 399 mills operating as on 15th March 2018, the industry data said.

The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) in July had projected a production of 35 MT in the 2018-19 season that started this month, taking into account higher cane acreage and forecast of normal monsoon.

Releasing the latest production figures, ISMA said sugar production during October-November reached 39.51 lakh tonnes, much higher than 27.82 lakh tonnes in the year-ago period.

Sugar industry body ISMA on Friday said that exports of sweetener become unviable after imposition of 20 percent customs duty but it will help in maintaining enough stock to meet the domestic demand.

New Delhi: India has exported over 1.6 million tonnes of sugar so far in 2015-16 marketing year that started from October last, up 46 percent from the whole of previous year, according to industry body ISMA.

Sugar industry body ISMA on Wednesday said the millers' cane price liability to farmers would reduce by about Rs 1,100 crore following the government's decision to give direct subsidy of Rs 4.5 per quintal to cane growers.  

 India's sugar output is estimated to decline by 4.62 per cent to 26.8 million tonnes in the 2015-16 marketing year, says an ICRA report.

India's sugar production rose by 16 percent to 27.84 million tonnes (MT) till May 15 of the current marketing year that started in October last year, resulting in sweetener's low prices and huge cane arrears to farmers at over Rs 21,000 crore.

Sugar output stood at 5.86 million tonnes in the October-December period of the 2013-14 season. Sugar season runs from October to September.

Sugar production in the country is expected to decline to 24 million tonnes (MT) during sugar year 2013-14, due to reduced cane crushing in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, a ratings agency said in its latest report.
