It is a step forward, said US President Joe Biden on George Floyd's verdict. A jury found former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin guilty of murdering Floyd.

Former Minneapolis Officer Derek Chauvin was convicted on Tuesday of murder, manslaughter in George Floyd's death. It is a case that had triggered worldwide protests, violence and a furious reexamination of racism and policing in the US.

Minneapolis has agreed to pay $27mn to settle a lawsuit by the family of George Floyd over his death in police custody. Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, died in May 2020, as a white Minneapolis police officer, kneeled on his neck for nearly 9 minutes.

Earlier, the results of two separate autopsies released on Monday (June 1) declared that May 25 death of George at the hands of Minneapolis police was a homicide.

Soldiers from Fort Bragg in north Carolina and Fort Drum in New York have been ordered to be ready to deploy within four hours if called, said a CNBC report. Soldiers in Fort Carson, in Colorado, and Fort Riley in Kansas have been told to be ready within 24 hours.
