The Zojila tunnel under the Zojila pass, is a 14.2 km long road tunnel. It is in the Himalayas, between Sonamarg and Dras city in Kargil district of the Indian Union Territory of Ladakh.
As many as 300-350 people, including women and children, stuck on the road to the Zojila Pass, connecting the Kashmir Valley to Ladakh, following heavy snowfall have been rescued by the Indian Army, a defence release said on Friday.
The road was thrown open by GOC 15 Corps Lt General KJS Dhillon in an inaugural function held at zero point Zojila Pass by flagging off a convoy.
Zojila Pass, which gets blocked due to snow in the winter months, is part of the Srinagar-Leh highway.
IL&FS was awarded the contract for building the strategic14.2 km-long Zojila tunnel to provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar, Kargil and Leh.
Zojila pass, situated at an altitude of 11,578-ft on Srinagar-Kargil-Leh NH, remains closed during winters due to heavy snowfall and avalanches, cutting Leh-Ladakh region from Kashmir.
